London Marathon

Rachel RA Capital performance by the BRJ Runners!!

After months of training, 15 BRJ runners together with their families and supporters, travelled down to London on 25 April, to compete in first Virgin London Marathon.

The weather on the day was cloudy with the occasional showers and sunny intervals. This made for excellent running conditions especially as most of the runners had trained in the snow and rain throughout the winter and early spring.

Darren Preston, in 1586th position, was the first home for the club in a time of 3hrs 7mins 4secs. He was followed home by Pieter Severein, who was making his club debut marathon run, in 3809th place in a time of 3hrs 26mins 44secs and Dan Avondoglio in 5842nd position in 3hrs 38mins 36secs. First lady home for the club was Gillian Peck in 8141st position with a time of 3hrs 49mins 50secs followed by Rachel Real in 8949th place and recording a new personal best time. Personal best were also recorded for Pieter Severein, and Ben Webster, while Louise Noble and Hugh Williams made their marathon debuts at the event.

Dambuster Tri/Ashby 20

Phil PearsonsOn a cold wet Saturday morning me (Phil), John and Ryan drove to Rutland to do the Dambuster Duathlon which consists of a 10k run 42k bike ride and finished off with a 5k run. The race started at 9am prompt. When we started the 10k run it was drizzling with rain, we ran out along the dam and back to tranistion where we collected our bikes and proceeded to do the 42k bike ride. Whilst we were half way around the drizzle turned to heavy rain. I caught Ryan up half way around, having climbed the Rutland Ripple and I don’t mean the chocolate. I got to the 2nd transition and was surprised to see John just putting on his trainers to start the final run. I rushed to put on my trainers but was unable to catch him. I managed to finish in a time of 2.34.20 and later to find out whilst shopping in Sainsburys that I had won 2nd in my age catergory. John 2.30.25 Ryan 2.39.08

John and Ryan were back out the next day to take part in the Ashby 20 where the run of the day was recorded by Steve Dockerill. Docky achieved his 3rd PB in 2010 (Stamford 30k, BRJ F/bite and now Ashby). This improved his 20M PB by 4 mins 11 Secs since Oakley 20 in 2008 and 17 mins 44 secs, and 270 positions, at this event in 2009.

Silverstone Half Marathon

Silverstone TeamWith the opening race of the Formula One season in Bahrain, it was rather appropriate that the BRJ Runners headed for Silverstone, "the home of British Motor Racing", for the annual pre-London half marathon. Conditions were bright and dry, the only problem being the gusty wind that is a common feature of this race circuit.

Darren "Jenson" Preston put in an absolutely stunning performance to come 4th (yes FOURTH!) in a time of 1h 15m 40s, 12 minutes faster than last year and not far behind Liz Yelling. With Darren's training mileage translating into impressive race results, he's definitely the one to watch at the London Marathon.

Second home for the BRJ was Keith in a time of 1h 33m 19s, slightly off his hoped for pace, but satisfactory in the conditions. Bren retired with engine problems, leaving Rachel and Lucy to come in third and fourth, just outside their respective PBs in a time of 1h 43m 40s/43s. Paula was third lady home, knocking over 3 minutes off her previous PB in 1h 45m 46s. Mike Graham (1:50:44) and Carolina (1:53:12) were the final BRJ finishers.  Full Results   View photos

Sussex Beacon Half Marathon

DockyIn preparation for the Brighton Marathon in April, Keith, Lucy and Steve travelled down to the south coast to take part in the Sussex Beacon half marathon. It was also an opportunity to see some of the marathon course and the Brighton area. Conditions on the day were pretty grim, with a strong wind and heavy showers of rain and sleet. At times it brought back memories of ToughGuy! Keith came in first in 1:34:29, Steve finished in 1:42:03 and Lucy battled through the rain to finish in 1:51:43. The conditions and the congestion at the start pushed out all our times, so we're all hoping for better things on our return in 2 months time.......Keith

Stamford 30k

It doesn't matter how many times you do the Stamford 30k, as many of the runners from BRJ who took part again in this years race will no doubt tell you, it never gets any easier. Nevertheless there were some great PB's and debut performances recorded over the notoriously hilly Lincolnshire course. Alex Tindall led the charge in his first runnng of the race whilst there were PB's from Andy Matson, Steve Dockerill and Nigel Maggs. Other BRJers making their debuts were Pieter Severein, Claire Ashton, Dan Avondoglia, Paula Elliot, Rachel Real and Hugh Williams. Tough Guy - THEY DID IT!

Sixteen runners of the BRJ RRC, together with their families and supporters traveled to Perton near Wolverhampton on 31 January to compete in the 2010 Tough Guy event.

Bren's story...

BrenThey call it Toughguy and they mean it. To finish this course you have to be physically tough to navigate the various obstacles which work every muscle in your body, but the physical effort is dwarfed my the mental resilience required to do all this at incredibly cold temperatures. Huge inch thick shards of rock hard ice smash into your shins as you career deeper into the water on feet that you ceased to have any feeling in half an hour ago and slowly your lungs begin to contract in terror as the water rises up to your chest. Only your mind can force you to do the unthinkable and submerge yourself fully in the stinking murk to go under a bridge, secure in the knowledge that you'll have to do it three more times and then use hands which are as numb as your feet to climb out shivering uncontrollably and then ascend a 40 foot high wooden frame to rope walk across another icy lake and a potential plunging return to the depths. Face challenges like this for three hours and you will understand that anyone who gets a Toughguy finishers medal will have well and truly earned it.

Tough Guy, which claims to be the world's most demanding one day survival ordeals, is organised by Billy Wilson (Mr Mouse), who claims nobody has ever finished the entire course according to his extremely demanding rules. The race consists of a cross country run followed by an assault course. Running the course involves risking barbed wire, cuts, scrapes, burns, dehydration, hypothermia, claustrophobia, electric shocks, sprains, twists, joint dislocation and broken bones and before running the course one must sign a "death warrant" which states that one acknowledge the risks and dangers the course brings along, and that one can not claim in the case of injury.

The event itself is not really a race but a test of personal endurance and was made more difficult by the weather on the day which freezing cold with outbreaks of sleet. This meant that the ice that had formed on the water obstacles never thawed.

After eight mile of mud, barbed wire, broken ice, freezing water and fire the first BRJ solo entrant to finish was Michael Wenn and the first team to finish consisted of John Wright, Lucy Moore and Keith and all the BRJ runners finished the course without any mishaps or injuries.

Keith's story...

KeithWith all the talk of death warrants and hypothermia and broken limbs, we began to think that the pre-event literature was a bit over the top and it couldn't really be that hard and serious, could it? Well actually yes, it was every bit as hard and serious as they make out. Within half a mile of the start we were in freezing cold water up to our thighs, with blocks of ice providing an additional hazard, and there was still 3 hours to go. Each obstacle on its own, on a warm, dry day, would be challenging. But they came at us relentlessly, one after the other, while we were getting colder and colder and it became a question of survival, endurance and a determination to just keep going to the end. The spirit was fantastic at all levels - within our own little team of three, within the BRJ runners as a whole, with the BRJ supporters and also amongst all the competitors. A great day out, and a great experience!

Folksworth 15

Alex TindallThe Folksworth 15 is traditionally the first long race for many runners in training for a spring marathon. Coming so early in the season the hilly course always provides a serious work out for those taking part. Twenty three runners from BRJ completed this years infamously tough race, including a number of debutants at the distance.

The team was lead home by Ironman Dan Avondoglia, closely followed by Tough Guy Steve Burton and the in form Alex Tindall. Great running from Kristine Cornelius and Anita Girvan saw them home one and two for the ladies. It was great for all those taking part to see many others from the club out on the course to cheer them on.

Sunday 10 January saw the BRJ make it's return, after 6 years absence, to taking part in the Cambridgeshire Cross Country Championships.

Darren, Lee, Ed, Steve and Keith arrived at Priory Park St Neots, home of the Riverside Frostbite course, on a cold, grey morning for the 10k Senior Mens race. It could have been worse though - a slight thaw overnight had turned some very icy sections into slightly more grippy slush! There were some good runs in the conditions, and Darren led the BRJ home in 19th place in a stunning time of 36:04.Lee just broke 40 minutes in 4oth place, Ed and Steve came in at around 41 minutes in 51st and 55th places respectively.Keith was the last BRJ runner home in 80th place out of 114 finishers.

Tough Guy

Steve B in the mud bath.On the Sunday after Boogie Nights, twelve BRJ recruits headed for Bassingbourne Barracks for Tough Guy training with Steve Burton. Nobody (apart from Steve) knew what we were actually letting ourselves in for. Scaling walls, jumping ditches, balancing on the top of walls, traversing Burmah bridges and swinging on the overhead bars was just the start. Pushing tyres, carrying tyres, carrying people, press-ups, situps and then we were off out into the country. “!! Incoming !!” and we were flat on our fronts – funny how the enemy always seemed to strike when were over a big muddy puddle! After a four mile cross country run, and doing press-ups in a pond, we were back at the assault course ready for our final timed run. The showers were very welcome after all of that, before we headed off to the Queen Adelaide in Croydon for lunch and refreshments.

A superb day, and many thanks to Steve for arranging it, running it, not being too hard on us, and providing us with T-Shirts! We raised some money for Help the Heroes too.

As you can imagine it was an early start on Sunday to travel to Longmoor for Hellrunner - down South! Once we got there was shocked to find out that over 5000 people would be racing! We managed to get near the front where the 8ft Devil sent us off! Horn went and through the red mist came the masses! All going good till 2 mile point when I went through a puddle but realised it was deeper than that and crashed head first into mud twisting my ankle. Fought through the next 8 miles of mud, hills lakes, bogs and sinking sand to complete my first Hellrunner! Time was 1.28 and came in first 400, so chuffed. Saw Gordon Ramsey come over line and grabbed him for photo shoot, he had no choice as he was hanging ha ha! What an experience and definitely recommend it to BRJ. Would like to thank all who sponsered me for Help the Heroes, talking to the other lads who ran we might have raised over £1000, so well done. Steve B

This was the 20th time this annual event has taken place, and the organisation could not be faulted. Jez Bottley completes The Isle of Wight Marathon

It took me about a week to come down from the high of running the London Marathon this year, the buzz was fantastic and I decided at that point I wanted to do another one before the year was out but the question was, which one? Having found a calendar of possible events one stuck out because I grew up there, the Isle of Wight.

The week prior to the event I went down with a cold and I wasn’t sure I’d be fit to run. I travelled to the Island on the Saturday and took the opportunity to drive the course in the afternoon. That evening I headed out to the local Italian only to be told there were no tables free, so the next best thing for carbs I could find was fish & chips (by the sea) – perfect.

That evening I went to bed with a full belly but still very chesty, however, the race morning arrived and I awoke with no chesty cold – a virtual miracle. The race start was 11:00 which meant a nice leisurely breakfast followed by a leisurely stroll along the esplanade to the race HQ at Ryde Rowing Club for registration.

As I was feeling good I decided my best tactic would be not to hold back but to push from the start. The first mile was flat along the esplanade but then you zig-zag steeply up hill until it levels out at Queens Road. This first climb is only about 140 feet but feels a lot more. The next 9 miles was continuous undulation but included one of the nicer more picturesque sections through Firestone Copse which was an added “loop” between Wootten and Binstead. I was very pleased my 5 mile time was 48:30 on this difficult terrain (Frostbite here I come!). By mile 9 my thighs were feeling the toll and I realised I needed to hold back so from that point on I decided to power walk up the bigger hills. This paid off and I was at 20 miles in 3:38, at this stage I was seriously beginning to think I could do 4:40 to 4:50. However, the drag from Sandown through Brading and onto Ryde is predominantly up hill. What goes up must eventually come down and the 160 foot descent to Ryde seafront was the final killer with thighs and knees really taking a pounding. I expected to make some time up down this final hill but it was too much and I succumbed to a walk for some of this too.

I finally crossed the finish line in 04:54:32 (which was just under 7 minutes quicker than my London Marathon time) in 96th place out of 118. I was really chuffed that a 14 stone chubby bloke with short fat hairy legs not built for running could better his previous marathon time on such a “demanding course”. I would recommend this marathon if you want something more challenging than your average flat course.

Well, I haven’t got a London Marathon place for 2010 so what next, the Snowdonia Marathon (30/10/10)? Bring it on..

Frostbite Race 1 - St Neots

A strong squad at the first race of this seasons Frostbite campaign saw BRJ come in 7th place in the senior race and 10th in the junior.

Conditions were chilly and overcast in Oxford when we set off just before 9, but within an hour the sun came out, the hills started and it was t-shirt conditions. After one stop for a cup of tea at 35 miles, and a lunch stop at 65 miles we were heading back into Cambridgeshire. For two of us this was about the time that we crossed the ‘comfortable' threshold into the ‘this is getting hard' area, but the hills ceased and we all arrived at Midsummer Common for refreshments at Fort St George. All that was left was to get back to Huntingdon - fortunately we didn't have to bike it, as a contingency plan for transport by car was in place! Keith's Oxford to Cambridge photos
