Bedford Parkrun: Tony Cotton, again using this event to perfect his Race-Walking skills, achieved another Age Category win. I gather Tony may have been running the "Brass Monkey 10K" today @ Rockingham Race Circuit. Cambridge Parkrun 5k #102 Our 19 finishers achieved a number of personal bests and Age Category places between them. For our Junior athletes, Charlie Barlow, who was pipped to the finish line by the evergreen David Smith, was 1st Junior Man 14 today. A debut club run for Charlotte Orugboh saw her take over from Amie Smith as the Fastest BRJ Girl over 5k. The senior event saw a PB at this venue for Darren Preston (but 53 secs shy of his overall club 5k PB). There were PBs, by 20 & 5 secs respectively, for Roger Holliday & Frank Holmes and Jez Bottley was making his debut over the Cambridge Parkrun course. There were Age Category placings for Roger, Frank and also for Lorna Higgins. Rockingham Brass Monkey 10k Sarah Hall, Karl Taylor and Tony Cotton took part in this event. |

Folksworth 15M: 29 BRJ runners tackled the Folksworth 15, in very windy conditions, despite that achieving 8 PB's and 8 Club 15 Mile Debuts. Thanks must also go to the "static" and "mobile" BRJ supporters & photographers that braved the windy conditions to encourage their fellow club mates or capture their pain on camera!
Cambridge Parkrun 12 seniors & 2 juniors took part today. Andy Matson
ran to his best form and exactly equalled his 5k PB set at this course
at Race #85 on 1st October 2010. Had it not been so windy, Andy would
have surely attained a PB. Both Deborah Rostant & Esther Cotton
achieved age catogory positions.

Bedford Parkrun 5k (#35) Esther Cotton improved her best time over this course, that she set last week. Cambridge Parkrun 5k (#100) 9 members braved the icy conditions. John O'Callaghan broke the 5k PB he set last weekend by 8 secs. March Frostbite A great club turnout with 7 Junior and 52 Senior members
braving the frosty conditions. The course around Whitemoor Prison, near
March, was used for the first time since December 2006 and as a result,
a large number were making debuts. 5 Seniors achieved PBs for the March
Frostbite. |

Beginners Course |
|
A course designed for complete beginners, novices and those returning from injury is starting on 12th January 2012.
This is an eight week course on Thursday evenings run by experienced runners from Huntingdon's BRJ Road Running Club. Dependent on current fitness levels, you will be taken through a progressive training plan, beginning with a combination of walking and jogging, building up to 30 minutes non-stop jogging. In addition to the Thursday evening runs you will be expected to run outside of the group in order to improve. This is a supportive and friendly group of runners, many of whom started with the group as beginners.
There is a £20 fee for the course to cover membership of the running club (to March 31st 2012), training support materials and coaching. If you fancy a challenge in 2012, please email Amy at Amy@brjroadrunners.org.uk. Places are limited and we will need to discuss your fitness levels prior to commencing the course. |

Ely 10K Ed McNeill led home the 20 BRJ runners in almost perfect running conditions over this fast, flat course. He must have been the unluckiest person out there today as his finish time exactly equalled the 10K PB time he set at the Cambourne 10k in April 2011. Hard luck Ed! Seven members did score 10k PBs today. Top Trump was Linda Crook who improved by an impressive 7 mins 8 sec! The other PB'ers were:- Amanda Roland - PB improved by 5 mins 1 sec, Sarah Louise (Lashes) Hall - PB improved by 4 mins 53 secs, Jackie Wren - PB improved by 1 min 42 secs and she was also the 3rd LV 45 prize winner, John Batchelor - PB improved by 48 secs, Ulf Maske - PB improved by 30 secs, Andy Barber - PB improved by 3 secs. There were a number of members making their club debut 10ks today (Gary & Anna Nichols, David Dunkerley, Sharon Saunders, Rosalind Innes & Mia Mead). Waterside 5M (Buckden) Lee Brooks led home the 14 strong BRJ team picking up a PB by 37 secs over the time set at the Thorney 5m in Aug 2010. Lee also picked up a prize as the 1st local runner home. 3 other club PBs were achieved today, which were:- Andy Matson - improved his 5m PB by 4 mins 19 secs, Steve Dockerill - Improved his PB by 2 mins 32 sec, Deborah Rostant - improved her PB by 7 secs. Again, there were a number of debut club runs at this distance for David & Karen Charman, Paul Jenner, Gillian Peck & Ian Wilson, whilst Marc Frohock completed his debut club road run since joining the BRJ |

Cambridge Parkrun 5K Frank Holmes missed out on a 5k by just 8 secs today and was closely pursued by Roger Holliday. BRJ had 4 Age Category placings today, including 3 Age Category winners (Frank Holmes, Esther & Tony Cotton) Great to see that after a number of injuries, that John O'Callaghan made his club 5k debut today (According to my records, his last Road Race was the Cambourne 10K on 5 April 2009)

Thank you to Mel Fowler for organising a great christmas party at Wood Green Animal Shelter, the food was certainly not dog's dinner! The 57 BRJers who made it there had a great night at the casino tables and on the disco floor. The next morning, Alan led a team of festive runners around Grafham Water, followed by breakfast at the Harbourview Cafe. Cambridge Parkrun 5K Andy Barber again led the BRJ team home and Phil Pearsons, Esther & Tony Cotton picked up Age Category positions
Linda Crook took part in the Nottingham Parkrun and Tony Cotton took part in the Ilford 5M walk run - after doing the Cambridge Parkrun. |

Bedford Half Marathon Having missed out by just 22 seconds at St Neots in November, Tim O'Connor was hoping to achieve the London Marathon AAA qualifying time at the Bedford Harriers Half Marathon. Unfortunately, the wild and windy weather put paid to a PB for Tim, and all of the other BRJ runners. However, the highlight of the day was that Anna Nichols competed in her debut run for the club. Frostbite #3, Hinchinbrooke Park There was large number of members making their Frostbite, or venue, debuts in both the Junior & Senior events, in almost perfect Cross Country running conditions. The overall results for this event were:- JUNIORS - The 9 BRJ Juniors achieved 10th place on the day with 440 Race Points earning 5 Running Points (now 11th place overall with a total of 13 Running Points, up from 12th place), Charlie Barlow led the team home, becoming the fastest BRJ boy over the course, with Dylan Lake and Sam Webber making their club debut appearances. Katie Lawrence also becomes the fastest BRJ girl over the course. SENIORS - The 42 BRJ Seniors achieved 6th place on the day with 884 Race Points earning 11 Running Points (Remain at 6th place overall with a total of 31 Running Points). There were a total of 370 finishers in the senior event with 42 BRJ finishers. The senior stats were equally impressive with:- Debut Club Runs - 8 Debut Frostbites - 2 Debut at Hinchingbrooke Park Venue - 18 PB's at the Venue- 8

Hereward Ultra. Of the 48 starters, Roger Holliday was taking part in his first Ultra Race, over a course that had had to be slightly extended this year (by 0.4 miles). Roger's average pace was equivalent to running the marathon distance in 4 hrs & 2 mins. For our 2 bald men in the relay event, Phil & Steve, the marathon distance would have been acheived in around 3 hrs 42 mins. Bedford Parkrun. Following on from her 1/2 Marathon PB last weekend, Yvonne Homewood has now added a 5K Road Race PB to her ever growing collection in her debut run at Bedford. Her run today was 2 mins 27 secs secs quicker and secured her 2nd place in her Age Category. This is the first time that Yvonne has achieved an Age Graded Percentage score of more than 57%! Tony Cotton, in racewalk mode, bettered his previous time over the Bedford course, to again score top honours in his age category. Cambridge Parkrun 5k Frank Holmes missed out on a 5K PB today by just 8 secs, but did secure 3rd in his Age Category. Linda Crook was the sole PB'er today, her 2nd 5K PB in as many weeks, with a 10 second improvement. |

St Neots Half Marathon This was the last Club Champs nominated event for this year and with ideal weather for endurance running, of the 46 BRJ finishers, 17 acheived PB's and there were 7 Club Half Marathon debutants, which included our top placed runner, Tim O'Connor. Tim's run makes him the 3rd fastest BRJ runner over the half marathon distance, edging out Darren Preston by just 18 seconds. This time also beats Tim's non-BRJ half marathon PB by about 3 minutes. Tim was well supported by our other "elite" men with 6 BRJ men in the top 100 finishers. Gillian Peck achieved her 6th PB of 2011 to lead home the ladies squad, with Rachel Real just beating Paula Elliott, who scored her first 70%+ age graded score, to the runner-up spot. Anita Girvan, who was personally paced by Alan Hannibal, dipped below 1:45 for the first time. The first 5 ladies home all acheived PB's today. Iain Drylie scored his 2nd half marathon PB of 2011 and I noted that even with the very thick fog, his Union Jack Shorts were visible for miles! St Neots 3k Junior Run Charlie Barlow headed home the BRJ Junior squad with an improved 3k PB by 1 min 10 secs, an age category placing and also becomes the fastest BRJ boy over the 3K by easing out former champion, Adam Drylie, by just 5 seconds. Bedford Parkrun 5K 2 Age Category placings this week, including one for Tony Cotton in his debut excursion over the Bedford course. Cambridge Parkrun 5K Back to normal this week at Cambridge with 2 PB's and 1 Age Category placing. A PB, and 2nd in his Age Category, for Roger Holliday with a finish time 44 secs better than in Cambs Parkrun # 84. Linda Crook secured her 5th Club PB of 2011 by a 14 secs margin her previous PB that was also set at Cambs Parkrun # 84. |

Cambridge Parkrun 5K (#92) As last week, there were no PB's at today's Cambridge Parkrun (although Alex Tindall missed out by just 4 seconds!), but there were 4 Age Category winners, including David Smith, who has started to run again for the club after his house move to March from Manea. Linda Crook participated in her club debut 10k over 2 hilly laps of London's Greenwich Park. Anthony Richardson also participated in his club debut 10k by
picking the obstacle filled Mens Survival of the Fittest (London) race
in Battersea Park where wading through skips full of ice cubes, climbing
through cars, and over straw bales sapped the energy! |
